Hiking: Getting Started
Hiking differs from walking because you choose to "get away from it all." Whether it is to enjoy the remoteness of the trail, you love to take pictures of waterfalls, or like the different plants and animals you will encounter, every hike will bring in a new experience. This is because every hike has as element of exploration to it. For this reason, more and more the age advantaged are taking up hiking.
The biggest mistake new hikers make is not being prepared. Unlike walking in the city, there is no quick escape if the weather changes or they weren't aware of the degree of difficulty of the hike. No matter how short the hike, take a fanny pack or day pack with essentials, like first aid, rain gear, food, and water.
Hiking on trails is different than walking, so make sure to train for the hike. Don't be embarrassed to wear the pack while training. Be aware of the terrain and slow down, hiking is not speed walking. Investigate hiking poles to give you more stability. Finding the right pace is a challenge. You should be able to go uphill without getting winded which sometimes means, very slowly! The best part of hiking is taking a break and enjoying the surroundings!
