Update:
This book is now in its second edition and we were thrilled that David Ryan asked us to recommend this book on his back cover. We have had many talks with David and believe he is on the same page as our mission with Fiftysense.com.
It was brought to my attention there was a great book about long distance hiking for the age advantaged hiker. I was pleased to read a book not only about hiking the Appalachian Trail, but also helpful hints for those hikers who aren't 20 years old and 6'3". It is a great reference book for planning any long distance hike.
I loved how David talked about the advantages of hiking slower – we get to see more as we slow down. David understands the concept of "hiking your own hike." The key is to decide what works for the individual and this book addresses the questions most of us will have when thinking of trying this adventure.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone contemplating a hike, or just wanting to understand why people will do such an activity.
